As I was getting out of my car, I accidentally dropped my really nice camera. I didn't notice anything wrong with it, and since I was in a hurry--part of the reason I dropped it in the first place--I didn't think too much about it.
Until I tried to start shooting and the image was oddly blurry.
That was when I looked at the lens and saw this:
Shattered UV Filter
The filter was toast. Thankfully, since it was a $20 protective lens, I could unscrew it, keep shooting, and purchase a replacement later that afternoon.
Great investment.
Protect your camera's really expensive lens with an inexpensive UV filter. It could save you a ton of grief and keep you shooting in a situation where you otherwise wouldn't be able to.
